Mission
The Child Development Lab (CDL) is an early childhood education and research center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison that brings together high-quality child care, teaching, and research in one integrated environment.
We provide nurturing, developmentally informed care for children from 6 weeks to 5 years old, while serving as a living laboratory for studying how children grow, learn, and thrive within families and communities.
We support the university’s mission through a model grounded in research, teaching, and outreach — applying what we learn to how we care and teach children.

Research
We support research that advances the field of early childhood development, including children’s learning, social-emotional growth, family relationships, and child care practices. Faculty and students conduct research in real classroom settings, helping translate developmental science into practice.
All research is carefully reviewed and approved to ensure it is ethical, respectful, and centered on the well-being of children and families.
Teaching
The Child Development Lab (CDL) is a hands-on learning environment for undergraduate students, interns, and student teachers. Students gain practical experience through internships, student teaching, practicum placements, and structured classroom observations connected to their coursework.
These experiences prepare future educators, researchers, and professionals to work thoughtfully and responsibly with young children.
Outreach
By integrating research and best practices into daily classroom life, we serve as a model for high-quality early childhood education. We actively share what we learn with families, educators, researchers, and the broader community to strengthen early learning environments beyond our walls.
